The Lost World

Join Now              Rating
Palaeontologist Professor George Challenger claims that dinosaurs are to be found in certain parts of the Amazon and is sponsored by a newspaper to journey to the region in order to prove his theories. His expedition includes Paula White, the daughter of a fellow explorer who was lost on the plateau on a previous trip, big game hunter Sir John Roxton, Professor Summer lee, who wants to catalogue the differing life-forms he is expecting to encounter, and Edward Malone, along for the ride in order to impress a girlfriend. Written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in1912, the film was originally made in1925 by First National Pictures and was a box office smash. The arrival of ‘talkies’ spelt the end of The Lost World and it was withdrawn from distribution in 1929,with all known prints and negatives being destroyed to pave the way for a possible sound version. In the event, none was made, although the original would prove the inspiration for such other epics as King Kong and Jurassic Park. Although better known for the creation of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s own favourite was George Challenger, who appeared in two further novels. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also proud of the film (in which he appears), taking test reels of the dinosaur footage created by Willis O’Brien to speaking engagements and passing them off as real proof of the existence of dinosaurs!
