Joe and Hoss visit the widow of Ben’s
friend Josh Layton. Hoss falls in love with Helen Layton and brings her back to the Ponderosa intent on marriage, but Adam begins to question her motives.

Joe shoots an arsonist in self defence and then finds himself responsible for looking after the man’s daughter. Is is not long before the man’s relatives begin looking for him and revenge.
